What Are Barge Boards?

Barge boards are fitted to the edge of a gable roof to protect eaves and roof timbers. Similar to fascia boards, they cover the connection between the roof and the exterior wall. Unlike fascia boards, barge boards do not have gutters attached to them.

  • Prevent damage or decay for roof timbers
  • Fixed diagonally along the edge of gable roofs
  • More visible than fascia boards

The Benefits of uPVC Barge Boards

  1. Durability

An ideal material for external components like bargeboards, uPVC is affordable and built to last. Completely waterproof, uPVC bargeboards withstand the weather and won’t rot, flake or require lots of upkeep over time. Our uPVC roofline holds a BBA accreditation for a lifespan of 35 years.

  2. Aesthetics

As the Roofline of a property is so prominent, the condition of your barge boards can make or break the look of your entire home. uPVC barge boards are available in a selection of different colours and finishes to match your taste, from classic shades like black or white, or a more traditional faux woodgrain finish.

  3. Low Maintenance

Whatever the weather, uPVC barge boards don’t require very much upkeep and don’t need repainting, varnishing, or sealing. By contrast, timber barge boards need repainting every 2-3 years. uPVC boards only need cleaning with soapy water to keep them looking their best.

  4. Weather Protection

Because it is waterproof by nature, uPVC is the perfect material to protect against the weather. Unlike timber and some metals, uPVC barge boards won’t be affected by water over time, so there is less risk of the weather getting through them and causing damage to your home.

  5. Long-Term Value

uPVC is usually a much more affordable material than timber and aluminium, making it a smaller up front cost. It also costs much less than timber to maintain over time, not needing to be repainted or refinished. Overall uPVC barge boards offer better long-term value, and sometimes short-term, than other materials.

Signs Your Barge Boards Need Replacing

Barge boards are subject to plenty of wind and rain over time. Being so high up, maintaining them can be hard, which can lead to damage and decay. Here are the signs that they may need replacing.

Peeling, flaking paintwork

Peeling or flaking paint on your timber boards needs to be investigated. If the timber feels firm then they probably just need sanding and repainting. If the timber is soft or crumbles, it needs to be replaced.

Damaged or crumbling boards

Damaged boards, or boards pulling away from the wall, need to be replaced. Gaps or cracks will allow rain to penetrate the timber leading to rot. Rotten boards that are soft or crumble when touched definitely need replacing.

Damp problems in the loft

If you’ve noticed damp in your attic or loft space near the edge of the gable, this could be a sign that the barge boards are allowing in the weather. Damaged boards or gaps need to be addressed and replaced.

Birds nesting in the eaves

Birds making their nests in the eaves or loft space is a clear sign your barge boards aren’t doing their job. Gaps and damage in your barge boards can allow birds and pests to make a home in your loft.

Barge board FAQs

Your questions on barge boards, answered by us.

What is the difference between a barge board and a fascia board?

Barge boards and fascia boards do similar jobs as part of the roofline, but are found in different locations. Barge boards are normally found on the end of gable roofs and fascia boards are more commonly found on the bottom of the sloped side of a roof. Barge boards are found at the gable end of a roof, angled like an inverted V, while fascia boards are horizontal and run along the edge of the roof behind the guttering.

How much does it cost to replace barge boards in the UK?

The cost of replacing barge boards will vary based on several factors, including the size of the property, the number of gable ends in the roof, and how accessible the barge boards are. Naturally, larger or more complex projects will usually cost more. For an free quote, get in touch today.

Is it better to cap or fully replace barge boards?

It’s recommended to fully replace old barge boards rather than capping or cloaking (adding new boards on top). Adding new boards without replacing the old can simply lock in problems like rot and damp, which will need addressing again in the future. At Anglian, we always provide a full roofline replacement service to ensure complete protection for many years to come.

What is the best material for barge boards?

Because barge boards are so exposed, you want them to be able to stand up to everything the weather can throw at them. A lot of barge boards are timber or uPVC because both are good at resisting the weather. However, timber needs to be treated and properly and regularly maintained every year or so, making it a more costly proposition in the long run. uPVC barge boards offer a very durable and cost-effective option. uPVC requires minimal maintenance and our white uPVC roofline is accredited to work effectively for 35 years.

How long do uPVC barge boards last?

Properly fitted uPVC barge boards can last decades with minimal maintenance. Our white uPVC bargeboards have an accreditation from the British Board of Agrement that states they will work effectively for 35 years. They also carry a 10-year guarantee for further peace of mind. uPVC is waterproof, strong and durable, ideal for bargeboards.
